Arts Volunteering Project

Jane Howlett, Chair of South Devon Society, attended the Council House on Thursday 30th November, at the invitation of Sue Evans, Tutor, from City College, Plymouth. In 2019 The Arts Society South Devon gave a Grant of £500 for various art materials, initially it was thought a substantial sized sculpture would be designed. With the restrictions of Covid this did morph into a large sensory wall hanging. Made from a backing of Calico with a pure silk sky painted with silk paints, all fabrics are natural with cottons and wool. These were painted with fabric paints and appliqued and quilted in place. The students ranged in ability with some able to draw out and plan the piece, some painted, whereas others were able to sew and assemble. Needless to say they all worked as a team. The wall hanging is stunning and although it is themed around Dartmoor, the 'beast of Bodmin Moor' has crept in with its glittery eyes. The wall hanging will be hung in the Council Chambers.

John Benjamin and the History of Jewellery

On Wednesday 15th November we welcomed John Benjamin to a Discovery Day which included lunch at our preferred venue in Plymouth, Boringdon Park Golf Club. What an interesting talk he gave on jewellery through the ages and particularly on how it has been incorporated into paintings, by many of the great artists. His knowledge, gained as an apprentice at a young age in  London, gave an insight into the source of many of the jewels contained within the pieces and had the audience, enthralled. Then, his slide show went on to some of the great jewels that have been owned by many famous people together with prices paid. The afternoon consisted of some valuations on pieces brought along by  and guests, with one or two surprises. A day very much enjoyed by those that attended.

The Roman Catholic Archives

In March this year The Arts Society South Devon enjoyed a very informative visit to The Roman Catholic Archives in Plymouth. Under the supervision of Sister Benignus we were shown an amazing collection of reliquaries and vestments. They range from 12C to 20C. Where some of these vestments were received into the archive showing wear and tear Sister Benignus is able, with her exacting ability to repair with great attention to detail. One of our group made a generous donation, which has enabled Sister Benignus to purchase further mannequins for the collection. A most informative visit.
